Roots of Empathy – Primary Schools Wanted

The RAISE Team at Merseyside Youth Association is looking for ten primary schools to take part in an exciting opportunity that will support children and give them the emotional skills to help them make a successful transition to secondary school by providing Roots Of Empathy’s award-winning programme in Year 5.

Merseyside Youth Association and Roots Of Empathy are collaborating to bring the Roots of Empathy programme to Liverpool.
The Youth Endowment Fund has commissioned Roots of Empathy to work with primary schools in a number of cities in England. We are looking to recruit up to ten community instructors and ten schools over the next month to begin delivery of the Roots of Empathy programme in early November.

The past two years have been exceptional in many ways and COVID-19 has been hugely disruptive to all education settings. It has been a time of anxiety and stress for many. Our children have witnessed and experienced both the pandemic and a raised awareness of racial inequity – unseen in our lifetimes. However, these important events provide us with an opportunity for change. A chance to help our children create a more aware, more just and kinder world.

Roots of Empathy is an evidence-based (with over 20 years of independent research) classroom programme for primary school children that decreases aggression, including bullying, and increases prosocial behaviours such as caring, sharing and inclusion. At the heart of the programme are a local parent and baby who visit a classroom over the course of a school year. Using an age-appropriate curriculum, a certified Roots of Empathy Instructor coaches the students to observe the baby’s intentions and to label the baby’s feelings. Children learn that we share the same feelings, and our feelings are at the core of our humanity.

This is the start of a three-year project and we very much hope that together we can make a positive impact in Liverpool.
