Pride, Poetry and People of Colour (POC)

In honour of LGBT History Month 2020, the young people of GYRO (YPAS’s LGBTQ+ Youth Group) curated a mini pop display in the education room at the International Slavery Museum.  The theme for LGBT+ History Month 2020 is Poetry, Prose and Plays.  GYRO young people focused their display on LGBT+ people of colour who have used their voices and inspirational words to speak up for marginalised people.  Via this, they wanted to highlight the depth and breadth of the LGBT+ community.  The inspiration came from James Baldwin who said: “Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced”.

The display was made possible with the support of Angelica Vanasse at the International Slavery Museum, who also provided the group with a special out of hour’s tour of the museum.

The final prints and artwork for the display were produced with the support of Catherine Shillito, Lead of Widening Participation Activity within the Outreach Team at LJMU.  Catherine organised a screen-printing workshop, which was facilitated, by Hannah Fray and Paul Davidson, Printmaking, Teaching Support, LJMU, who put a lot of work into prepping the designs and teaching the young people how to screenprint.
