Understanding ARFID (Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder)

This Bitesize course gives an overview of ARFID in children and young people. We'll explore what ARFID is, and what it isn’t focusing on the difference between a ‘picky eater’ and a diagnosis of ARFID.

We'll also consider what factors may contribute to presentations of ARFID and the impact on a child or young person and what professionals, parents and carers can do to help including signposting to local and online support services.

Who’s it for?
Anyone working with children and young people — as well as parents, carers, and those supporting families.

You’ll learn to:
✅ Understanding of what an ARFID is and what is considered when making a diagnosis
✅ Knowledge of the characteristics of ARFID and factors that contribute to ARFID presentations
✅ Insight into the signs and symptoms to look out for, including what is picky eating and what is an ARFID diagnosis?
✅ Strategies to support a child or young person with ARFID including signposting

We've come to the end of another NOW Festival, our We've come to the end of another NOW Festival, our flagship event of the year - and what a week it's been.

Thank you to everyone involved; the @myaraiseteam for months of planning and making it happen, the schools, groups, organisations and volunteers behind the scenes, parents and carers for your support, and of course the stars of the show, the children and young people.

This year, we explored Mental Health and the Environment. Damian Hart, Principal Development Manager of the RAISE Team, sums up the performances:

“NOW Fest 2026 explored how the environments children and young people grow up in — socially, economically and physically — have a profound impact on their mental health and wellbeing. Through a series of bold, youth-led performances from schools and organisations, the festival explored the local factors that both damage and protect our mental health.

“The pieces highlighted how inequality can shape experiences for different groups, increasing the need for mental health support, while also amplifying what children and young people themselves feel about their communities and the issues that matter most to them.”

Well done to everyone involved and huge thanks to our funders: @nhscandm and @merseysidevrp and to @dave_brownlee for capturing the performances so brilliantly. 📸
