About this course:

Developed and delivered by Merseyside Youth Association’s RAISE Mental Health Promotion Team, the training aims to improve awareness of the Mental Health Act, the Mental Capacity Act and related legislation, ensuring that professionals can confidently identify and respond to the mental health needs of children and young people. It will help strengthen understanding of the mental health legal frameworks that guide care and support across community and hospital settings.

In developing this course, we’ve worked closely with a wide range of professionals — from commissioners and community services to the police, health, social care, and young people themselves. We also visited hospital settings and spoke directly with children and young people with lived experience of in-patient Tier 4 care to build a complete understanding of the support available across different settings.

This area of work, and the situations of young people involved, can be complex. That’s why we’ve created a series of short case studies that reflect real experiences and bring today’s learning to life. This multi-agency approach ensures the content is both practical and grounded in the day-to-day realities of Liverpool’s mental health landscape.

This training aims to give professionals the confidence to navigate the complexities of mental health law while keeping the child or young person at the centre of every decision. It’s been developed in partnership with those who work directly with families every day — and with input from young people themselves.

Learning outcomes:

The course provides participants with:

  • A clear understanding of the key legal frameworks that underpin mental health care for children and young people.
  • Practical guidance on the different sections of the Mental Health Act, using real-world case studies to explore the processes and decision-making pathways involved.
  • Insight into how children and young people’s mental health needs are being met across both community and inpatient settings, and how agencies can work together more effectively.
