Introducing: Mental Health Legislation – New Training for Professionals Working with Children and Young People

This new Bitesize training session has been developed to enhance awareness, confidence, and competence around the application of mental health legislation.

This session is aimed at practitioners working with children and young people across health, education, social care, police, and voluntary sectors who want to deepen their understanding of the legal landscape surrounding young people’s mental health needs.

What the session covers:

  • Understanding Mental Health Law
Explore key aspects of the Mental Health Act, including Sections 2, 3, and 136, and what these mean for young people—both informal and detained patients.

  • Navigating Tier 4 Pathways
Gain insight into the Tier 4 admission process, including gatekeeping, CNEST, and gateway pathways, and how these affect young people and their families/carers, including stigma and the setting best suited for the young person.

  • The Broader Legal Context
Learn how the Children’s Act (including Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards DoLS), Human Rights Act, and UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) intersect with aftercare and Community Treatment Orders

  • Roles and Responsibilities in Crisis
Clarify the roles of Section 12 Doctors, Approved Mental Health Professionals (AMHPs), and Independent Mental Health Advocates (IMHAs) in supporting young people.

  • Scenarios and Case Studies
Engage with experiences through case studies that bring theory to life and explore the impact of legal processes on young people, families, and carers.

This session is designed to enable delegates to understand legislation, reduce stigma, and promote collaborative, child-centred approaches to crisis care, equipping them with the knowledge to act with confidence, compassion, and legal literacy.
